ITAT assists Kandahar Air Wing’s Afghan civil engineers

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Welding, carpentry, electrical wiring and plumbing are some of the skill sets Afghan civilians and service members are learning at Kandahar Air Wing. These are skills the Afghans are going to need in order to maintain buildings that were recently transitioned over to the wing.

Helping to facilitate an Afghan air force led facility sustainment force is U.S. Army reservist 1st Lt. Ivan Kong, an Idaho Falls native, who is the infrastructure training advisory team site lead at Kandahar Air Wing.

“I advise the Afghan civil engineer squadron commander on solving systematic problems with manning, funding, equipping and training his force,” said Kong. “There’s a training site on Kandahar Air Wing I visit twice a day to discuss training progress with the Afghan site manager and monitor student interest and quality of training.”

The workforce is already learning their trade just a month into an eight-month training course.

Afghan Air Force Sgt. Khudainazer, a former soldier in the Afghan National Army, is among the trainees learning to become a well-rounded generator maintainer.

“I’ve learned a lot in the past few weeks,” said Khudainazer through an interpreter. “My favorite subject so far is electrical wiring. Right now, we’re learning in the classroom and I look forward to applying this information to actual hands-on work.”

Afghan instructor, Mr. Fardin, has 10 years experience as a civil engineer and is sharing his knowledge to the seven civilians and 11 service members in the course.

“It’s been good working with the coalition force,” said Fardin through a translator. “We’re doing good work for Afghanistan.”

When the trainees complete the course, they will be the first engineers of Kandahar Air Wing’s civil engineer squadron.
