KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – The residents of Ma’ruf district celebrated the grand opening of a new medical clinic during a ribbon cutting ceremony, Jan. 31.
The new clinic will give the residents of Ma’ruf district the ability to be treated closer to home, rather than making the long trip to Kandahar City.
“It’s important to have a clinic here because our district is very remote from Kandahar City,” said the new lab technician at the clinic. “It can take a very long time to drive to Kandahar City, and sometimes the patient can get worse, or even pass away by the time they get there.”
The clinic is one of the first projects sponsored by the Afghan government in the district and marks a major improvement to the quality of life to the people of Ma’ruf.
“This is the first major project that has been done here in Ma’ruf,” said the Ma’ruf district governor, Abdul Samat Durrani. “The clinic has made the people of Ma’ruf very happy.”
Currently the clinic employs two nurses, a nurse assistant, a pharmacist, two vaccination technicians, and two guards. The plan for the future is to have as many as 15 doctors working at the clinic to help support the people of Ma’ruf.
