    4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. – Twenty three newly promoted sergeants from the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade here, continued the Army tradition of being inducted to the non-commissioned officer corps in a ceremony held in their honor at Nutter Field House, Jan. 27, at Nutter Field House.

The tradition of inducting soldiers making the rank of sergeant in the NCO corps has been practiced for more than 100 years. Newly promoted sergeants are presented with the history of the NCO and spend several days in classes specific to their development as new NCOs. An outstanding senior NCO is selected from the ranks to instruct these classes and set the standard before the sergeants return to their units.

Guest speakers are also a tradition at NCO Induction ceremonies, Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Wells, CSM for Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood, took the honor for this event.

With 32 years of military experience, Wells pulled references from two time-honored documents, in his address to the inductees. He specifically recalled the second paragraph of the "Charge to the Newly Promoted NCO", which expresses how soldiers of less ranks are required to obey lawful orders of their NCOs, and in return the NCOs agree to accept responsibility for the actions of those Soldiers.

Wells also emphasized the first two sentences of the Creed of the NCO. The creed states, “No one is more professional than I. I am a non-commissioned officer, a leader of soldiers.”

“If you live by that second paragraph and those two sentences, you’re going to do alright,” said Wells.

CSM Buford Noland, CSM for 193rd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th MEB, wrapped up the ceremony by engaging the inductees directly and reminding the group of their new level of responsibility.

“If you see something wrong, don’t leave it for the next guy, you fix it, sergeant,” said Noland.

Both Wells and Noland were joined by the youngest and oldest inductees to share in cutting a celebratory cake which is a well-known tradition.

There were many NCOs from across the 4th MEB present to congratulate each of the inductees with a handshake followed by cake.
