Afghan National Army logistics leaders discuss sustainment operations

BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan – The 10th Sustainment Brigade “Muleskinner,” the 201st Combat Logistics Kandak and the 203rd CLK met to discuss mission command and operations Jan. 25 at Bagram Air Field.

Soldiers from the 10th SBDE, 10th Sustainment Brigade Troops Battalion “Workhorse” and 142nd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion “Wagonmaster” participated in a series of briefings designed to explain how the Tactical Operations Center works and its importance in mission command in relation to sustainment operations.

The brigade gave an overview of its mission, the function of the operations, intelligence and support operation sections and their role in the sustainment mission.

The brigade’s mission of conducting operational and tactical sustainment in Regional Command North, East and Capital, in support of U.S. and coalition forces, was briefed highlighting the partnership with the Afghan National Security Forces in order to promote security, improve governance and promote reconstruction and development.

The role of the non-commissioned officer, the backbone of the Army, was stressed multiple times throughout the day.

Command Sgt. Maj. Jose A. Castillo, the 10th SBDE senior enlisted adviser, explained how we turn orders into action by empowering the NCO Corps and addressing the fundamentals of training, standards and discipline, physical fitness and leadership.

“Our sergeants are subject matter experts,” said Castillo. “They train our soldiers. They are the executors of the mission.”

In order to give the CLK leaders a better understanding of operations at the battalion level, they went to the 142nd CSSB headquarters. The battalion’s mission, intent, key tasks and endstate were discussed and how they support the brigade.

The Wagonmasters walked the kandak leaders through some preconvoy operations. It began with a visit to the Convoy Readiness Center. Soldiers utilize the center to prepare for an upcoming mission and get a meal while they wait.

Several soldiers of the 1138th Transportation Company, 142nd CSSB, demonstrated some of the steps they complete prior to going on mission.

The intelligence section briefed the soldiers on weather, road conditions and possible threats in the area among other things.

The convoy commander conducted a convoy brief and went over some tactics, techniques and procedures, risk assessment and the operations order before going into his precombat checks prior to the precombat inspection.

Soldiers lined up while the convoy commander checked to ensure every soldier had all the necessary equipment needed to accomplish the mission. Eye protection, night vision goggles, body armor and a water source were among a list of items that were checked. Soldiers conducted a rollover drill immediately after. Soldiers also demonstrated how they conduct weapons technical inspections on several weapons. The demonstration ended with a concise vehicle maintenance check.

“We learned a lot,” said Col. Dur Mohammad, the 201st CLK commander. “I promise you everything we learned today, I will take back to my soldiers.”

The kandak leaders observed the demonstrations and occasionally asked questions that were answered by the subject matter expert. They also provided advice on things that could be added to improve the briefing.

The kandaks are getting close to being able to conduct missions on their own.

Mohammad thanked the 10th SBDE and said his team has been constantly training to ensure a high state of readiness.

“We are ready to do our mission,” Mohammad said.
