PHOENIX - Throughout 2011, Junior Rank and Marine Corps Recruiting Command conducted 17 Diamond Flight football camps. During these camps, players displaying the greatest combination of football talent, focus on academics and outstanding moral character received invitations to play in the inaugural Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl, scheduled for Jan. 3 at Chase Field here.
One of those players is defensive end and linebacker Courtnye Wynn. To Wynn, a Norfolk, Va., native and son of two former Marines, the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl is more than just a football game.
“This game means a lot to me because I’m representing my parents and what they stand for,” said Wynn, who is being coached by his father during Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl Week. “I respect the Marines and everything they do for our country.”
Wynn, who will play for the East team during the upcoming game, attended the Diamond Flight camp in Virginia Beach, Va., during this past summer.
“I liked the coaching and the way the coaches knew what they were talking about,” said Wynn about the camp.
Aside from the obvious talent he possesses on the field, Wynn is also a student-athlete of great character.
“I do the right thing, even when no one is looking,” said Wynn. “I’ve also always been a leader, even as an underclassmen playing with seniors.”
Wynn’s good grades in school and talent on the gridiron have led to him receiving a scholarship to play football at the University of Virginia next fall.
“I chose the University of Virginia because I love the coaches there and I’ll have the opportunity to play as a freshman,” said Wynn. “I also like the University of Virginia because my grandparents live close to campus.”
Stop by Chase Field or tune in to CBS Sports Network at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3, to see Wynn in action during the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl.
