RALEIGH, N.C. -- When two general officers gather to pay tribute to your career, it is safe to say you have made an impact on the North Carolina National Guard, the Army, state and the nation.
Army Lt. Gen. William E. Ingram Jr., director of the Army National Guard and former adjutant general of North Carolina and Army Maj. Gen. Greg Lusk, adjutant general of North Carolina, honored Army Col. Tom Harris, former chief of staff – Army, NCNG, at his retirement ceremony held at the NCNG Joint Force Headquarters here, Dec. 9.
“Congratulations on a great career,” said Lusk.
Harris, a career officer with 30 years of service in the NCNG, led in a wide variety of assignments from field artillery batteries to the highest levels of strategy and planning at the NCNG headquarters.
“His forward thinking leaves a legacy in the North Carolina National Guard,”” said Ingram. “The country and state are indebted to him.”
Harris’ efforts were fundamental to the transition of the NCNG from a cold war strategic reserve to an operational force deploying since 9-11 more than 19,000 soldiers and airmen across the world and serving in all 100 counties at home.
“The soldiers and airmen of the North Carolina National Guard continue to have a vital role in the national defense and state service,” said Harris. “We are ready to do both at the same time.”
Ingram recalled that Harris throughout his career brought new ideas and techniques forward.
“He was always right on the money,” said Ingram.
For his 30 years of service to state and nation Ingram awarded Harris the Legion of Merit, one of the highest U.S. military honors, for his exceptional service and achievement for the state and nation.
Harris expressed his gratitude to members of his family, fellow soldiers, airmen and senior leaders for coming to his retirement ceremony.
“I am amazed, I am not much on ceremony, thank you for being here,” said Harris.
