CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- “Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for service members and their families by providing knowledge, skills, education and training in support of mission readiness.”
In celebration of Nation Month of the Military Family, that Marine Corps Family Team Building mission was recently showcased during a Resource Arsenal held at the Ball Center aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune with information to help the families of service members.
The National Month of the Military Family was established in 1993 by Armed Services YMCA, with the U.S. government recognizing the occasion every year since.
Every November, Americans are called on to honor military families through private action and public service for the contributions they make in support of service members.
Each year, ASYMCA celebrates the month to demonstrate the nation’s support and commitment to the families of military personnel.
“With hundreds of thousands of service members deployed overseas, recognizing the daily sacrifices made by military families have never been more important,” according to the ASYMCA website.
Representatives from Young Moms Connect, Harriotte B. Smith Library, Blue Star Families, Marine Corps K-12 school liaison, Marine Corps Community Services Commercial Sponsorship Program and the Marine Corps Exchange attended the forum to show off the multiple resources each of them offer to families aboard the base.
The workshop was available to service members, their families, family readiness officers and other resource providers.
One of the newest resources offered to the families of service members is a program called Young Moms Connect, of the Onslow County Partnership for Children, which provides support services to young pregnant and parenting women and works to improve community conditions for young families.
“While the program is called Young Moms Connect, the services we provide are also available to single young fathers as well,” said Jessica Huff, parent specialist with Young Moms Connect.
The program is committed to the educational success of young parents, children who are safe, nurtured and supported in their development, the health of parents and children, including prenatal health, and the success and self-sufficiency of families.
Services available include free resource center membership, assistance with childcare fees, assistance in paying for continuing education classes at Coastal Carolina Community College and transportation assistance through Onslow United Transit.
“The best part about Young Moms Connect is that parents can participate in as much or as little of the program as they want,” said Huff. “Some people take advantage of our program solely for the purpose of financial aid, while others take advantage of every service we offer.”
