CAMP SHELBY, Miss. - The Alabama and Central Gulf Region Biomedical Services of the American Red Cross staged a blood collection drive at Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center on Nov. 22.
“We need so many units a day, so we always come out with goals that we try to meet or exceed,” said Team Supervisor Sally Smith. “Hospitals depend on the blood we collect, which helps prevent surgeries and other procedures from being postponed due to lack of available blood supplies.”
The team collected 20 productive units from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. toward their goal of 21, and Smith said that each donation helps three people. There is always a demand for blood in the central Gulf Coast area, she said, and it goes wherever it is needed.
“We’ve had a great response,” said Smith, “and we really appreciate everyone’s donation.”
