MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - This New River Knights season ended in a game against Headquarters and Support Battalion on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Nov. 14.

In the beginning of the game, the Knights were in good spirits. They recovered the kickoff, and immediately put the pressure on HQSPTBN.

The Knights’ halfback Jeremy Bacon punched holes through the opposing defensive line and made yards up field, and when the HQSPTBN quarterback tried running the ball, he was viciously tackled by Matt Hensen, Knights defensive end.

The Knights aggressive offense was matched only by the solid defense of HQSPTBN. By half time, the score was 13-13, and defensive coach Joshua Mount rallied the Knights’ spirits.

“We are one team with one goal,” said Mount. “And that goal is to win the championship. We can do anything when we play together.”

The Knights fought a tough game after half-time. But so did the other team.

Neither team scored during the third quarter, each succumbing to the others defense. In the final minutes of the fourth quarter, HQSPTBN scored a touchdown and an extra point.

Even though the Knights didn’t win this year, the team left their last field of the season in good spirits.

“I think that we had a pretty good season,” said Head Coach Bill Stankowski. “We have a good team with a whole lot of talent.”

Highlights of this season included defensive back Joshua Goretzke’s six interceptions in one game, halfback Jeremy Bacon’s rushing ability and quarterback Channing Smith’s long-range passes.

Throughout the season, the Knights had a hard time getting their entire team out of work to practice during the day, due to their players work schedule.

“You play like you train,” said Stankowski. “And I think that showed. Two of the three games we lost were after we didn’t get everybody out to practice.”

After all the games were said and done, the Knights’ record for this season was 5-3. They entered the playoffs in second place, and with this loss, they left in third. The Knights must now wait until next year to advance through the playoffs and win the championship.
