SAVANNAH, Ga. – Advance Individual Training students will soon benefit from newer living quarters during their brief stay at the Fort Gordon barracks, courtesy of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District.
As part of a barracks renovation project, the Corps will begin a $23.5 million project in early 2012 to transform two 41,506 square-foot buildings of the old, bay-style barracks into college dormitory-like facilities. This overhaul is said to extend the life of the buildings an additional 25 years, while giving the buildings a new look and upgrade to current Army standards. They are slated for completion in March 2015.
“We start with a directive from the Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management and then take the same old buildings, clear them out, and add new features based on the orders from the Military Construction Project Data Form,” said Steve Hill, project manager at the district. “The changes will provide modern comfort to the soldiers while saving costs from efficiencies.”
The contract was awarded, Sept. 20, to Engineering Design Technologies, Inc., of Marietta, Ga. It includes demolition, painting, and upgrades to the electric, plumbing, and heating and air system. Each building will have the capacity to house 190 soldiers, with two soldiers per room. The rooms will provide a minimum of 90 square feet per soldier and contain two beds and wardrobe lockers, one desk and chair, and a bathroom and kitchenette.
A new sloped roof and landscaping will round out the renovation giving the exterior a fresh look. Additional building amenities to serve the residents include one dayroom, for lounging, and two laundry rooms and a computer learning center per floor.
“We take care of all of the details so the soldiers can move in to these facilities and concentrate on training,” said Hill.
The barracks will house the students while they rotate through their initial Army specialty training, normally six to 12 weeks, before reporting to their first duty station. During the construction, new students will be housed in adjacent facilities. Fort Gordon is home of the Signal Corps and trains more soldiers than any other branch training center of the United States Army.
Like all Army construction, the upgraded facilities will satisfy Silver-level criteria established by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system, in accordance with the U.S. Green Building Council standards. Eco-friendly features include the use of energy efficient building materials, lighting and ventilation systems.
