NAVAL AIR FACILITY MISAWA, Japan – Commander, Naval Forces Japan conducted a site visit to Naval Air Facility Misawa, Nov. 8-9, 2011 and took the opportunity to talk with sailors, and conduct an all-hands call.

During his two-day stop at the northern-Japan located U.S. naval installation, Cloyd spent time touring NAF Misawa and many of its tenant commands, including Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Detachment Misawa, Navy Information Operations Command Misawa, and Commander, Task Force 72.

"The Navy Misawa team has a lot of mission sets up here, certainly with our maritime patrol force which is growing with the return of the P-3 deployments here," said Cloyd. "There are also several other commands here with their own missions that all contribute to the role of the forward deployed naval forces."

Throughout the visit, Cloyd used the occasion to learn more about each command's operations, and the aspects of carrying out the mission in northern Japan’s unique environment.

"I wanted to come up here to see the sailors and their families, and see what the team up here in Misawa is doing," said Cloyd. "It's always good to stay connected, and see how Navy Region Japan can provide the best possible support with both mission perspective and quality-of-life issues here in Northern Honshu Island."

Cloyd also was open for questions during the all-hands call where he addressed a myriad of current issues pertinent to sailors stationed within his region.

"Pretty much everywhere I've been in the region for the last several months, two of the biggest topics sailors have brought up have been perform-to-serve and the Enlisted Retention Board," said Cloyd. "These are clearly issues that affect sailors and their families personally and directly, and it is near and dear to my heart. Helping them understand all the facets of these programs is something that is of immense importance to me."

Cloyd closed out the all-hands call by thanking sailors for their continued service, and to let them know they are his number one priority.

"We talk a lot in our profession about the great systems and things we do, and the missions we perform but, I think it's important to remember that we fundamentally serve for each other," said Cloyd. "Our profession of service and sacrifice is entirely about people and that's not only those of us in uniform, it includes civil service employees and our families. That is certainly first and foremost in my mind everyday and honestly the reason I continue to serve"
