MOSUL, Iraq ( October 6, 2006) - Iraqi Security Forces along with Soldiers of the 549th Military Police Company conducted an operation to let insurgents know that killing innocent civilians, members of the ISF and Coalition Soldiers will not be tolerated in Mosul, Iraq.

Acting on tips from local residents, Operation Medusa was conducted on Oct. 4, in an industrial area located in central Mosul, targeting suspected anti-Iraqi force locations. The purpose of the mission was to disrupt and deter AIF cell operations in the city.

"Operation Medusa was a combined Iraqi Army, Iraqi Police and Coalition Force cordon and search operation of suspected insurgent targets," said Capt. Larry Joseph Bergeron, commander, 549th MP Co.

The mission began with a joint forces link-up near Combat Out-Post Fortitude and proceeded with a simultaneous assault on a suspected Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device factory, a VBIED exchange point and an AIF meeting location.

According to Bergeron, operations like Medusa are nothing new to Mosul. Coalition Forces are working hand and hand with ISF daily to build confidence in their skills as well as better relationships between them and the people they are charged to protect.

"It builds confidence between all ISF and improves their capabilities with cordon and search operations. By communicating with the public it builds the peoples confidence in their ability to protect them," said Bergeron.

Bergeron credit's the mission's success to the high level of cooperation and enthusiasm of each participant exhibited during the operation and stated that this operation should serve as the model for all Iraqi Security Forces throughout Iraq.

As for his Soldiers performance, Bergeron remarked, "Soldiers performed magnificently. This was our first company level operation in 10 months in Iraq. Their discipline and level of training definitely showed on the objective and I'm very proud of them."

Detaining 13 suspected insurgents and disrupting their activity in the city made this operation a win for all. Coalition, ISF and the people of Mosul benefited greatly from the mission.

"The people of Mosul benefited because the Iraqi Security Forces proved their ability to identify AIF strong points in the city, as well as their abilities to conduct operations in those areas identified. They expressed a desire to go back there in the future to show the Iraqi people that they are committed to their safety and security," concluded Bergeron.
