CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – Third Army hosted a Run for Your Life Halloween 5K as well as a haunted house and costume contest here, Oct. 31.

Many participants in the 5K chose to dress up in costumes, which ranged from Captain America to Batman, and even Mario from “Super Mario Brothers.”

Petty Officer 3rd Class Naaman Barrows, aviation boatswain’s mate, U.S. Navy Customs and West Springfield, Mass., native, chose to dress up as Superman.

“My little sister calls me Superman,” said Barrows. “So if I had to buy a costume, this was the perfect one.”

The costume also helped him break up the monotony of running a 5K, said Barrows.

“It’s nice to dress up and have a little fun,” Barrows explained.

Notorious 5K winner, Staff Sgt. Long Tran, biomedical and container management non-commissioned officer, 3rd Medical Command (Deployment Support), got into the spirit as well by wearing a Frankenstein’s Monster mask. Tran finished the race first with a time of 16 minutes, 44 seconds.

Across the street from the finish line was a haunted house hosted by the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Zone 1 Community Center and run by MWR staff and volunteers. Many of the 5K participants, having finished the run, braved the haunted house.

Francisco Serrano, MWR center lead and native of Baytown, Texas heard many positive comments about the haunted house.

“Many people said they never thought it would be this scary, others said it was really good and some were almost in tears,” said Serrano.

Serrano also said that the haunted house was a good way to bring a little bit of home to theater by giving people a way to have fun and relieve the stress of being in a deployed environment.

Closing the haunted house temporarily, Serrano acted as master of ceremonies for a costume contest. Prizes for scariest costume, best costume, and funniest costume were given away based on the crowd’s reaction when each contestant showcased his or her costume.

By holding morale building events such as the Run for Your Life Halloween 5K, haunted house, and costume contest, Third Army is shaping the future by promoting high morale among deployed service members.
