USAG HUMPHREYS, South Korea - Nearly 400 service members, civilians and family members lined up outside the Super Gym at United States Army Garrison Humphreys, South Korea Oct. 2, 2011, to support and participate in Korea's 2nd Annual Army Ten-Miler Shadow Run.

The Shadow Run start time was specifically set at 9 p.m. to coincide with the actual Army Ten-Miler that would be held a week later in Washington.

The race route was designed around the Camp Humphrey’s airfield, which totaled five miles, runners would finish two laps to complete the ten miles.

Capt. James Spillman, a race participant from Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 194th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 501st Sustainment Brigade, said that the most "heartbreaking" and "beautiful" sight of the race is the finish line.

"The first time around, your soul is crushed because you know you have one more lap to go," said Spillman. "Once you see it start to come up again, you’re grinning ear to ear because you know you’re almost done.”

Capt. Karl Lee, assistant operations officer, HHC, 194th CSSB, 501st SBDE, and his wife, Trina Lee, ran as a couple, finishing the race in 2:02:36.

“It really tests your intestinal fortitude and will power, especially after the pain takes over your whole body,” said Karl.

Karl enthusiastically said that he would "definitely" run the race over again if given the chance. Karl prepares constantly throughout the year running in random local and military races around the area.

Spillman and Lee were not alone. Other leaders and soldiers from the 194th CSSB also came out to participate and support soldiers running in the race.

“It was exciting to see the esprit de corps among the soldiers and family members, both running and cheering for their family and friends," said Capt. David Laird, intelligence officer, HHC, 194th CSSB, 501st SBDE. "It seems like it was a very successful event, and I’m glad I was a part of it, even though I didn’t actually run.”

Laird, who volunteered to take pictures and cheer for his fellow Provider battalion members, said that he was undecided whether he would participate in the race next year.

First Sgt. Kelvin Jackson, race participant, 348th Quartermaster Company, 194th CSSB, 501st SBDE, said that he and his wife took on the challenge together, even going as far as wearing matching attire while running the race.
