CONTINGENCY OPERATING BASE ADDER, Iraq – The soldiers who run the convoy support center at Contingency Operating Base Adder, Iraq, keep busy with convoys running in and out throughout each day. They recently experienced something new when they welcomed the first self-redeploying unit to leave Iraq as troops work toward an expected withdrawal from the country at the end of the year.

The 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, stopped at COB Adder Oct. 7 to rest and re-fuel on their way out of the country. After arriving on base, the unit, which was originally scheduled to redeploy, was re-missioned.

After their stop, they continued their journey to a new location to carry out their next mission.

“This is a very significant milestone,” said Maj. Natasha Jones, a New Orleans, La., native and the executive officer for the 4th Special Troops Battalion, 4th Sustainment Brigade, 310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command. “This was the first in the expected flow of self-redeploying convoys to flow through Adder. The units are returning to Kuwait and the U.S. and taking all of the vehicles and equipment out of Iraq as they leave.”

In preparation for the influx of soldiers, the battalion oversaw construction of new living areas earlier this year to accommodate the troops passing through.

“We provide reception, billeting, Class 1 and Class 3 supplies and vehicle maintenance,” said Capt. Douglas Wells, the officer-in-charge of the CSC and a Frostbite Falls, Minn., native. “Over the coming months, some of the units will pick up a new mission in Kuwait and some will return home right away.”

The CSC at COB Adder works as a logistics hub for southern Iraq, coordinating with various agencies to provide for any needs transitional convoys may have.
