PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. - Marines no longer have to take the annual Marine Corps Common Skills General Military Subjects test per Marine Administrative Message 543/11 released Sept. 21.

Training and Education Command is currently developing a new, more hands-on curriculum for Marines.

The intent of the training remains for commanders and officers in charge to ensure that every Marine maintains a common set of combat skills to allow them to be immediately effective in a combat environment regardless of military occupational specialty.

Before, Marines would take a test online as many times as they needed in order to pass, said Maj. Dennis Martino, formal school management supervisor for TECOM.

It is stated in the message that the program was intended to keep Marines up-to-date with training, but has not held up to those expectations.

Furthermore the MarAdmin reads that common skills training should be performance-based and that the current test does not support this training method, is outdated and does not contribute to unit training. The program under development will take a new approach to educating Marines.

“There is not going to be a test associated with this,” Martino said. “We’re going to put the events and standards out there and then it’s going to be the responsibility of the units to get their Marines to that level,” he said. “The unit training management plan, their training schedule for the year, should encompass that.”

Martino said units might use periods of professional military education and other training methods to meet these standards, but tests will no longer be used for Marines.

As for entry-level testing, recruits, while in recruit training, will continue with the current basic skills test and practical application evaluations until the new order is written in December, but will still continue with written tests from then on.

The Marine Corps Common Skills test Volume 1 will encompass testing for the recruit training depots, Officer Candidate School and The Basic School. Representatives from each command have contributed to the new curriculum.
