KANDAHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Members of the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team engineering department visited the site of a silo weight scale project to conduct an assessment on the current phase.

The project consists of one truck scale that will include a small shack for managing the scales. The scales will provide a 100 ton electronically operated scale as well as a supporting structure to provide weights of long haul agricultural operations.

The majority of the grain that Kandahar will be receiving will be imported from India as a humanitarian aid to the province.

“Soon the province of Kandahar will be a major supplier of grain,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Emilio Rodriguez, Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team engineer department from Atlanta, Ga. “A weight scale will be greatly needed in order to ensure proper weight of the incoming grain.”

The genesis of the scales project stemmed from the need of a weight scale for the incoming deliveries of international grain. Once fully operational, the scales will generate revenue and benefit the local population.

The Kandahar PRT is tasked with conducting all quality assurance reports as the project progresses. The PRT engineering department will ensure that the ongoing project meets all guidelines and stipulations in the scope of work.

“As the project progresses, we will provide weekly, bi-weekly or monthly reports to the contractors,” said Rodriguez.

The weight scales will be assisting more than 100,000 people in the local area.

Rodriguez added that this scale will help the people of Kandahar have a more accurate accounting of how much grain they are receiving, therefore giving them a better revenue turnaround.

Although there is only one scale being constructed, the benefits will be more what was asked for in the long run.

"As engineers, it is our job to make sure that this project is constructed correctly and with the best technology,” said Rodriguez. “The hard work of the people will finally be valued by the completion of this project.”
