ATLANTA - Third Army/ARCENT Chief Information Officer Kaffia Jones was promoted to the rank of brigadier general during a ceremony in Atlanta Sept. 10.

Guests from around the world watched as Brig. Gen. Jones, a native of Beaufort, S.C., and the first female officer in the 335th Signal Command (Theater) to obtain the rank of general officer, was pinned.

Brig. Gen. Jones currently serves as both the commander of the 335th Signal Command (Theater) (Provisional) and as deputy chief of staff of Information Technology for Third Army/ARCENT Communications.

“ARCENT is very fortunate to have her in our command and on our team,” said Lt. Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, Third Army/ ARCENT commanding general. “I have great trust and confidence in her abilities. She is making a huge impact in helping Operation New Dawn come to an end while also providing great support across the entire theater. This is a tremendous day for ARCENT as well as the 335th.”

Since April, Brig. Gen. Jones has been deployed to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, where she leads 2,800 soldiers and civilians deployed across Iraq, Afghanistan and other areas in the ARCENT area of operation. She also manages a budget of $450 million and provides network and key communication systems for coalition and joint commanders.

At the ceremony, Brig. Gen. Jones was pinned by Maj. Gen. Stuart Dyer, the 335th Signal Command (Theater) Commanding General, Ellis Gillison, her brother and Ida Sumpter, her sister.

Following the promotion, Jones thanked the many people who supported her throughout the course of her 35-year military career.

“It’s not all about me,” she said, after noting that she could not have achieved her rank without the support of her family, her soldiers, academic mentors, personal friends and the senior non-commissioned officers who guided her as a young private and second lieutenant.

Since joining the U.S. Army as an enlisted soldier in 1976, Brig. Gen. Jones has served in a diverse array of assignments as a communications, administrative and operations officer as well as a company, battalion and brigade commander. In addition to her current deployment, she has deployed numerous times to Iraq and Afghanistan in support of Operations New Dawn and Iraqi and Enduring Freedom.

Her current command, the 335th Signal Command (Theater), is an operational reserve force of active and reserve soldiers who directly support OEF and OND. The 335th provides the entire realm of information management services to Soldiers and coalition partners in Southwest Asia to include command and control and reliable communications for voice, data and e-mail.

As a Third Army/ ARCENT information technology officer, she is part of the Army’s longest continuously-deployed warfighting headquarters, which is currently supporting warfighter operations in four distinct locations to include its Main Command Post at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., its Forward Command Post in Kuwait, ARCENT Support Element-Iraq and ARCENT Coordination Support Element- Afghanistan.
