PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. -- The Lowcountry is scheduled to host the upcoming 2nd annual Lt. Dan Weekend, honoring severely wounded veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, including a Sept. 16 musical performance by the man himself – Gary Sinise.

The Lowcountry is scheduled to host the upcoming 2nd annual Lieutenant Dan Weekend, honoring severely wounded veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, including a Sept. 16 musical performance by the man himself – Gary Sinise.

Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band take the stage at the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park in downtown Beaufort at 8:30 p.m. for a concert open to the general public. Ticket sales are available online or at the park for $15 each for service members or $25 for all others.

Gates will open at 5 p.m. Short films and a warm-up band will begin at 6:00 p.m. Ticket holders are encouraged to bring folding chairs or blankets for seating. Coolers or strollers are prohibited.

The weekend event coincides with the City of Beaufort’s 300th anniversary parade on Sept. 17 and Sinise is set to serve as its grand marshal. Sinise played Lt. Dan, a soldier who lost his legs in Vietnam, in the movie “Forrest Gump,” which was filmed throughout the Lowcountry.

Among the other events is a Sept. 15 free screening of the documentary film “Lt. Dan Band: For the Common Good,” that will be shown at 8 p.m. in the Waterfront Park. Producer and director Jonathan Flora will host the film that follows the band’s travels to support troops.

From Sept. 16-23, the Conflict Zone, a photography exhibit by combat photographers, will be open to the public at the Loft in Beaufort’s City Hall.

On Sept. 17, the Lt. Dan 5K Run will kick off at 8:45 a.m. from Bay Street, while the Lt. Dan Bike Ride will take place at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on a self-contained, 11-mile loop within the air station.

Additional events are planned for wounded veterans, including a golf tournament on the Parris Island golf course Sept. 16.
