SALAH AD DIN, Iraq - Senior Airman Thomas Stabler just wanted to lose weight and Tech. Sgt. Roy Gunter wanted to lose weight to keep up with active his daughter.

Within five months, the two airmen from Montgomery Air National Guard Base, Ala., lost a total of 71 pounds.

Stabler’s original goal was to lose 25 pounds.

“I came here weighing 220 pounds, and I wanted to hit 195,” said Stabler, 332nd ECS network administrator. “I blew past 195, so my new goal is 175.”

During Stabler’s latest weigh in at the scale, he had lost a total of 43 pounds, putting him two pounds shy of his new goal.

To accomplish his goal, Stabler did “P90X” workouts and ran.

“Since April, I’ve ran more than 180 miles here,” said the Prattville, Ala., native. “I’ve also shaved about a minute off of my mile-and-a-half run time.”

“I feel 43 times better,” he continued. “When I go home, I want to continue running and training and hopefully run a half marathon.”

Before Gunter came to JBB, at 240 pounds, he was having trouble keeping up with his little girl.

“My back would hurt when I would bend down to pick her up,” said Gunter, 332nd ECS radio transmissions non-commissioned officer in charge.

Gunter, who is originally from Birmingham, Ala., now weighs 212 pounds and has a goal to lose at least 12 more.

“I want to remain physically fit and keep up with the little ones,” said Gunter.

Gunter and Stabler’s physical fitness spread to other members in their unit. Gunter also became the unit’s physical training leader after he arrived here.

“We had individuals with substandard physical fitness test scores, so I worked out with them every morning, and now they have all passed their tests,” he said. “I have a degree in exercise science and wellness, with a minor in nutrition, and this is the first time I was able to use my education over a long period of time, so I feel like I got my money’s worth.”

Both airmen also followed a similar diet.

“We counted calories and stuck with the green labels,” said Stabler. “We ate a lot of chicken and fish.”

The two airmen may have had different reasons for losing weight, but they both lost significant amounts of weight using similar methods.
