CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Senior leaders from around Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune gathered at the Paradise Point Officers’ Club, Aug. 17, for the annual Combined Federal Campaign breakfast and training session to kick off next year’s donation process.
This year marks the CFC’s 50th anniversary.
Since President John F. Kennedy established the CFC in 1961, the campaign has raised more than $5 billion for local, national and international organizations.
According to Danielle Pentek, assistant director of Onslow County CFC, “We are the only authorized workplace campaign for military and federal employees.”
The Office of Personnel Management defines the mission for the CFC to “promote and support [charity toward others] through a program that is employee focused, cost efficient and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all.”
To make the CFC easily accessible, service members will be presented the opportunity to donate in their workplace. They can also make donations at the CFC office on MCB Camp Lejeune or online at onslowcountycfc.org.
Onslow County, MCB Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River have set a goal to raise $1 million this year.
“We have [more than] 2,600 charities in our brochures,” said Pentek. “If you can think of an organization, I can almost guarantee you that it’s in our brochure.”
For those looking to research specific organizations before donating, information about charities, including tax numbers, phone numbers and percentages of donated money that go toward running the charity, is available on the Onslow County CFC website.
“The CFC offers donors confidence, choice and convenience,” Pentek said. “The confidence comes from knowing all charities have been verified through the Internal Revenue Service. Donors have the choice to put money toward whatever they want to support and the process is convenient by offering online donations or through a payroll deduction.”
The 2011 drive is scheduled to run from Sept. 8 until Dec. 2.
According to the CFC website, “After 50 years, it’s time to celebrate this success and thank you for your continued support. We hope you will take the opportunity to continue as a volunteer into this history year. All yearlong we will be recognizing the significant efforts made by federal employees through the CFC and announcing lots of new and exciting changes. Come be a part of history, and continue to help us make a difference to those that need it most.”
