FARGO, N.D. — A new Crash/Fire/Rescue building at the North Dakota Air National Guard’s 119th Wing will decrease time in responding to emergencies at Hector Airfield. The building will be dedicated during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m., Aug. 31. It will be followed by a tour of the new building.

The $6.5 million project was funded by the U.S. Air Force as part of a package aimed to replace aging fire halls across the nation. In Fargo, the original building was built in 1955, making it the oldest at the North Dakota Air National Guard. It also left airmen with less square footage than what’s authorized for a department of its size. The position of the new building alongside Hector Airport will now decrease response time for both civilian and military aircraft emergencies by as much as 70 percent compared to the previous location to the south. It also allows the Air Guard, which is the primary responder to aircraft emergencies in Fargo, a better location to respond to future growth at the airport.

The new building achieves high environmental standards in lighting and geothermal energy, and was certified LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver by the U.S. Green Building Council. Rainwater collection will be used for irrigation at the site, as well. The structure spans 22,400 square feet with 13 bays for equipment. The limited size of the old building, which was less than 11,000 square feet, prevented all of the equipment from being stored inside, which made the winter months difficult.

Now, an alarm room overlooks the airport, providing a close and immediate view of any situation that may occur. Additional, state-of-the-art classroom space will allow more training capabilities, with multiple classes able to run simultaneously during unit training assemblies. Additionally, the new building includes 10 sleeping quarters, a small gym, a conference room and office space for the growing staff, which now includes 29 full-time positions.

Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota adjutant general, is expected to attend and speak at the ceremony, as well as Col. Rick Gibney, 119th Wing commander. Chief Master Sgt. Mark Solem, 119th Wing fire chief, will host the event.
