BISMARCK, N.D. - Captain's Landing Township in Morton County presented a check for $1,785 to the North Dakota National Guard Foundation Aug. 23 to thank the North Dakota National Guard for all of its efforts during the 2011 flood fight. The money was donated by approximately 60 homeowners as a way of saying thank you to the soldiers and airmen who served nearly 90 days in the central North Dakota flood fight in the Bismarck-Mandan area.

Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, adjutant general for the North Dakota National Guard, accepted the check on behalf of the foundation and said, "I am proud of our National Guardsmen who served to protect our cities from the rising flood waters. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you on behalf of all our soldiers and airmen who served. It was an honor for us to serve alongside all of you in the fight to protect your homes."

The Grand Forks, N.D.,-based 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery Regiment was unit initially responsible for coordinating the Guard's effort during the flood response and help build a levee system protecting the township from the Missouri River. The unit commander, Lt. Col. Jonathan Erickson, accepted a plaque from the township that recognized the 1-188th ADA and all of the soldiers and airmen who served in the area.

Bob Hruby, chairman of Captain Landing's Township said, "People here felt like this was the least we could do to recognize the outstanding effort and assistance provided by the North Dakota National Guard to help us save our community. Through high winds, storms, and day and night, they were there for us through it all, and we thank them."

The North Dakota National Guard Foundation is a private, nonprofit, charitable organization that supports programs beneficial to North Dakota National Guard members and their families. The foundation has two primary support activities - the North Dakota National Guard Tragedy Assistance Programs for Survivors, and the Emergency Relief Fund.

The North Dakota National Guard TAPS supports the national TAPS program, which provides services to those who have lost a loved one serving in the Armed Forces. The funds are used to cover transportation costs for families of fallen heroes to travel to Washington, D.C., to participate in the annual National TAPS program. North Dakota is one of only a few states to provide this benefit for their families of the fallen.

The North Dakota National Guard ERF provides financial support to Guardsmen in unforeseen emergency situations, such as natural disasters, accident, illness, fire or theft. All North Dakota National Guard soldiers, airmen and their dependents are eligible for assistance.
