CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – Several hundred service members participated in a 5K run/walk to kick off the Coast Guard’s 221st birthday Aug. 4.
Coast Guard Lt. John Bannon, Redeployment Assistance Inspection Detachment, 595th Transportation Brigade, and native of San Diego, addressed the participants at the beginning of the event.
“The Coast Guard is the oldest continuous seagoing service, and in 2003 we became part of homeland security,” Bannon said.
The Coast Guard had a strong showing of those willing to take the 5K challenge.
“I enjoyed the run,” said Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Eric Sobczak, RAID team and Virginia Beach, Va., native. “I am now acclimated to the weather and improved my run time from the 4th of July run by 25 seconds.”
“Being here is a tremendous opportunity not many coast guardsmen get,” Sobczak added. “I am happy to be here to help the army redeploy and keep their cargo from getting distressed at the ports.”
“The Coast Guard has a continuous mission in peacetime and war; protecting the water ways,” said Bannon. “We are a small, but great service.”
This 221st birthday commemorates the continuous efforts by the Coast Guard to provide maritime law enforcement and to support the Third Army mission abroad and stateside.
