LOS ANGELES - Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific) participated in Los Angeles Navy Week conducting STEM activities and showcasing the commands robotics technologies July 26.

Outreach personnel from SSC Pacific worked alongside sailors to showcase science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities to students from Manual Arts High School’s robotics club.

“Engineering is all about creativity,” said Dr. Jim J. Rohr, director of the STEM outreach program at SSC Pacific. “It’s about not thinking like anyone else.”

Rohr kicked-off the outreach event with the students by sharing how “thinking outside the box” sparks inventiveness and imagination, serving as main components of engineering. SSC Pacific demonstrated various shared acoustic and mechanical resonance activities and the vanguard robot, arranged on a temporary obstacle course.

In addition to the STEM activities, sailors from the Navy Recruiting Depot Los Angeles introduced a simulator that allowed students to explore various naval scenarios.

“I thought it was great – I liked the fighter pilots,” said Sabas Garcia, a senior at Manual Arts High School. “I want to be an aerospace engineer, build my own plane, and fly it.”

In addition to traveling inside the cockpit with the pilots, the simulator allowed spectators to fly in a helicopter over the bow of the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), travel in a nuclear submarine, and dive alongside naval special operation forces.

The sailors were excited to share their experiences with the students as part of Navy week.

“I get to come out and let the students know about the different job fields in the Navy,” said Aviation Warfare Systems Operator 1st Class John P. Bradley. “I’m proud to be a part of this organization, knowing that I’m able to get out in the world to protect people.”

Students shared their appreciation for having SSC Pacific personnel and NRD LA sailors visit their school. Upon the conclusion of the event, students presented Rohr with a jacket emblazoned with their robotics team mascot.

“I think it’s great that SSC Pacific and the Navy came out to visit our school,” said Korayma Arevalo, a senior at Manual Arts High school. “It’s great that SSC Pacific had the opportunity to show us different options available in STEM while meeting with SPAWAR employees. After my experiences today and seeing Navy personnel in uniform, I feel like I can make a real difference in the world.”

Los Angeles Navy Week was held in conjunction with the Summer X games that included ship tours, Navy band performances and demonstrations by the Leap Frogs to the public.

As the Navy's Information Systems Dominance Command, SPAWAR participates regularly in STEM events and programs with a goal of inspiring and preparing young men and women for STEM careers.
