GHAZNI PROVINCE, Afghanistan – To promote freedom of press in Afghanistan, the Polish Ghazni Provincial Reconstruction Team donated office equipment, cameras, printers and dictaphones to the director of the Ghazni Information and the Culture Department, July 24.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland funded the more than $24,000 in equipment that will be transferred to the newspaper office Sanayee and the news agency Bakhtar.
While the equipment will reside at two editorial offices, it will be available to many journalists, said Hamidullah Sarwary, director of the Information and the Culture Department.
“Our Department cooperates with over 20 journalists. We know that they still need many courses and good equipment. [This equipment will] help them,” said Sarwary.
The Polish PRT donated also almost 40 thousands sheets of paper to the local printing house where the weekly newspaper Sanayee is printed.
“For several years we have launched many projects dedicated to the local media,” said Polish army Spc. Marek Aloksa, Ghazni Provincial Reconstruction Team. “We try to support them by providing media with equipment and organizing various courses for journalists. Now we are launching an English language course for 10 Afghan journalists.
Next, Aloksa said, the PRT plans on upgrading equipment for a TV station.
