CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait– The Third Army Education Center now offers a three-week Fundamental Academic Skills Training class to all 3rd Army soldiers stationed here. The intent is to help soldiers improve their General Technical score on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test.
“A lot of soldiers scored well enough on their ASVAB to get into Army,” said Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Melvin Fogle, FAST class instructor and program manager for U.S. Central Command Distribution Operation Center. “Now, many soldiers want to better their careers and be great at what they do.”
The FAST class program is designed to raise GT scores by teaching and focusing on reading comprehension, writing and math.
The program requires soldiers to take a pre-diagnostic test to evaluate their scores and see what areas need improvement, said Fogle.
Through quizzes and a post diagnostic test, Fogle will be able to gauge the student progress from the pre-diagnostic result.
Once the soldiers complete the course, Central Texas College will conduct a GT predictor test. Each soldier will have the opportunity to sit with a guidance counselor to evaluate the results of the predictor test and which will determine if they are ready to take the ASVAB exam.
Currently, the class is made up of 18 soldiers with different ranks and ages. They are assigned to different units throughout Camp Arifjan.
“I want to go Green to Gold,” said Spc. Romeo Frett, 20, a native of Jersey City, N.J., assigned to 3rd Army administrative cell (G-1). “Currently, I’m enrolled in American Military University taking college courses.”
Romeo said at first he wasn’t going to sign up for the class, but knew he wanted to improve his low scores. After doing research on available options for the class, he changed his mind and signed-up for the hands-on class versus online course.
“In class, I’m able to raise my hand and ask questions,” said Romeo. “The instructor is real good and I feel like I’m back in school again. I’m glad I made this choice to take this class.”
Although the learning is fundamental, soldiers of all ages feel the need to better themselves by raising their GT score.
“I’m here to better myself and raise my GT score,” Spc. Oliver Washington, 50, from Chicago, assigned to Third Army Joint Task Logistics-6 and a member of the Illinois National Guard. “When I go back home, I’m going to apply for an electrician license. This class will help me prepare for the exam to be a licensed electrician.”
FAST class is an Army sponsored program. The course is free and only available to soldiers, adds Fogle.
