OAKLAND, Calif. – What better way to celebrate Independence Day than by watching America's pastime?
On Independence Day, Navy personnel attended San Francisco Giants and Oakland A's games as part of the teams' military appreciation.
Service members were treated to a free game by Operation Care and Comfort – a nonprofit group that provides support to troops, veterans, and their families – and some sailors even got to meet with the players and get autographed baseballs.
A portion of ticket sales went to support programs for overseas service members.
Petty Officer 1st Class Wade McCurley, of Sonora, Calif., was among the Navy personnel who enjoyed the Oakland A's game with his wife and two children.
"It was a great time out with the family on the Fourth of July," he said. "It was a wonderful experience knowing we were there to raise money to boost the morale of our troops overseas."
Brad Ziegler, Oakland A's relief pitcher, also helped coordinate the July 4 event and spent time talking with service members, signing autographs, and taking photos.
“Independence Day is a very special day," Ziegler said between signing autographs and taking photos with troops. He added that it makes him proud to host the troops and honor them for their service.
"We’re indebted to those who serve and grateful for the sacrifices they make for us,” he said.
