PARAMARIBO, Suriname - The first rotation of members from 114th Civil Engineer Squadron completed their final days of their Suriname deployment here July 9.

Members of the 114th CES have finished their two week deployment to Suriname South America, where they work on constructing the Alkmaar Clinic in the Commewijne District as part of exercise New Horizons. The 114th deployment followed two army deployments that laid the foundation and block work for the clinic throughout June.

“When we first arrived on the site 100 percent of the block work was complete,” said Senior Master Sgt. James Volden, 114th Civil Engineer Squadron. “What we have done is set up all the trusses, installed all the surface sheeting on the roof, soffit material, gable end steel, and fascia material all to 100 percent completion, as well as starting on painting and electrical.”

“From a training stand point we have a lot of different specialties here, instead of doing our normal specialty we were all doing a lot of jobs outside of our normal comfort zone,” said Senior Airman Trevor Krcil, 114th Civil Engineer Squadron. “Everyone got a variety of training from tasks used to construct the building outside of their normal career field.”

Krcil went on to say, “Building a structure out here is great, the people are real positive and happy to see us.”

“This rotation along with the previous two, epitomize the way a New Horizons project should be conducted,” said Lt. Col. John Blackwell, New Horizons Task Force commander. “If I ever am in a situation where I am again a task force commander as part of New Horizons or even if I am in the sandbox I hope to work with the South Dakota National Guard again.”

The 114th Civil Engineer Squadron has a second rotation coming to Suriname, July 11. This second rotation will pick up were the first group left off. They will work on electrical, plumbing, and other finishing touches on the inside, working side by side with local contractors who will be working on windows, doors, and gutters.

The bad news, according to Blackwell, is that we have moved so quickly through the construction project that the final two rotations of National Guard troops scheduled to work after the 114th Civil Engineers may have to be assigned a new mission.
