Combat Logistics Battalion Marines conduct convoy training

22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit

SOUDA BAY, Greece – Motor Transportation Marines with Combat Logistics Battalion 22, 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit conducted convoy training in Souda Bay, Greece, June 8, 2011.

The course is designed to familiarize the Marines with leading convoys through potentially hostile situations and was conducted alongside the pier.

“Today’s training was focused on communication,” said 2nd Lt. Jeptha Johnson, motor transport platoon commander with CLB 22. “Typically we have officers and staff non-commissioned officers as convoy commanders. I want to make my NCOs and below comfortable commanding convoys. If something happens, they can step up.”

As part of the training, Marines conducted a short convoy along the pier, simulating contact from enemy forces and situations involving improvised explosive devices.

“Being on ship we can get complacent, so it’s good to get out here and get some training accomplished,” said Cpl. Joseph Roy, a motor transport operator with CLB 22. “In real situations, we can minimize casualties due to inexperience.”

The Marines and sailors of the 22nd MEU are currently deployed with Amphibious Squadron 6 aboard the USS Bataan Amphibious Ready Group serving as a flexible, formidable and potent force who continues to train and improve their capability to operate as a cohesive and effective Marine Air Ground Task Force.

The 22nd MEU is a multimission, capable force, commanded by Col. Eric Steidl and comprised of an Aviation Combat Element, Marine Tilt Rotor Squadron 263 (Reinforced); a Logistics Combat Element, Combat Logistics Battalion 22; a Ground Combat Element, Battalion Landing Team, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment; and its Command Element.

Marine Expeditionary Units are the Marine Corps’ smallest permanent Marine Air-Ground Task Force, and is comprised of approximately 2,200 Marines and sailors ready to provide immediate response to a hostile environment or crisis.
