DAKOTA DUNES, S.D. – Members of the 740th Transportation Company based out of Milbank and it’s detachment out of Aberdeen, have gone from annual training to a State Active Duty tour here June 24.
The 740th along with other units from the South Dakota National Guard have answered the call to duty and are now in the fight against the rising Missouri River. After being activated on June 23, the 740th answered the call by accepting the quick reactionary force mission and are currently working on their first response by shoring up the back side of a levee.
Many members of the Guard have been expecting to receive the call from their units to report for the flood response duties, said Pfc. Trever McDaniel, 740th Transportation Company, Aberdeen.
“I’ve been waiting for the call since the 4th of June and I think it’s a good experience so far,” said McDaniel.
Everybody here was willing to help and we have several other members back at our unit who are willing to activate if necessary, said Staff Sgt. Paula Beckler.
“This is the kind of experience I joined for… over 20 years ago,” said Beckler. “This is the third flood I have activated for and I love helping people.”
Some members of the 153rd Engineer Battalion, Forward Support Company have volunteered to stay behind to help train the 740th and operate some of the heavy equipment as augmentees to the unit, said Spc. Zach Campbell.
“I just returned from basic training and Advanced Individual Training so this kind of feels natural, not only that but it also makes for great hands on training,” said Campbell.
