Reach Every Military Child in North Carolina is an organization that helps schools and families all over the state of North Carolina to find the resources to help military children.
For their actions and assistance to the military children of North Carolina, the MCNC received the 2011 Pete Taylor Award and a $7,000 prize to help them continue their fight.
The Pete Taylor Award is given to an organization that helps our military and their families.
“MCNC is an organization created by all the military school liaisons in North Carolina,” said Donna M. Bagley, the military school liaison for Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. “We decided to break up the state into eight sectors, and from there, assist the local area’s leadership on what is available for the military children of not only the Marine Corps but all the military services.”
Bagley said MCNC realized there are hundreds of children in North Carolina whose parents are in the National Guard or active-duty military and some of the schools do not even realize it.
“I am the section eight head and I assist the Asheville area,” said Bagley. “I held a meeting with several teachers and principals who didn’t realize how many students in their school had parents in the military. It is our job to give them the information they need to assist these children.”
Bagley said a teacher with an Asheville school contacted her after she found out she had a couple in her class.
“This teacher was a military brat herself,” said Bagley. “The teacher felt like she needed to give a lesson to her students to help them learn about what these children are going through day in and day out.”
Bagley said it is the MCNC’s mission to make sure every military child has their educational needs met while supplying the schools with the tools to give them a great education.
“The average military child moves about three times more than the average child,” said Bagley. “Because of this reason we are trying to teach students, families and school faculty what is available to help these children. Whether it is ways around rules to help transferring students, or just giving them help and advice for helping a child to adapt to a new environment. We here at the MCNC are going to do whatever we can to assist our military children.”
The next meeting of the MCNC will be in August here at Cherry Point, where they will discuss what they will use the $7,000 for within the organization.
