FORWARD OPERATING BASE GHAZNI, Afghanistan - The Ghazni Women Engagement Team recently organized a volleyball match between Afghan female high school students and women stationed at Forward Operating Base Ghazni.

The match was part of a monthly program where local women are invited to the FOB for different activities to help strengthen relationships, said U.S. Army Maj Alex Dietrich, Ghazni WET officer-in-charge.

"This is an opportunity for us to explain to the local women what the coalition forces’ task is in Ghazni province. We also can make sure that women understand that they can trust the coalition forces,” said Dietrich. “Moreover, through such meetings they can see that there are also women in the coalition forces structure; that they are educated, professional, they have access to health care, justice, and enjoy full social rights,” said Dietrich.

The Afghan team consisted of girls from Ghazni High School. Shukria Well, Department for Women, also attended the meeting.

The hangar echoed with shouts, laughter and even applause when one of the teams gained some points. The Afghan team had a particularly large group of supporters in the crowd.

"We do not have too many opportunities to play volleyball. We can practice only at school, an hour before the lessons start," said Fatima, an 18-year-old high school student. "We wanted to come here to learn about the ladies of the coalition forces and to take part in the competition."

After the match, all the ladies went to the PRT office to share a meal. Although the Polish-American team won the match, they gave out diplomas to the visiting team for their great commitment and high-levels of play.
