ILOPANGO, El Salvador— At the sound of a whistle, competitors stepped off, beginning the Fuerzas Comando 2011 “Forced March” event, June 17 - June 18, at Volcano Boqueron.

Fuerzas Comando, established in 2004, is a U.S. Southern Command-sponsored special operations skills competition and senior-leader seminar, which is conducted annually in Central and South America and the Caribbean.

The “Forced March” event challenged 6-man teams from 19 nations to complete the 16.8 kilometer-long forced march while carrying a 30-pound rucksack and a rifle.

The competitors were timed with a pro-timer device starting with the first step over the start line. This event is worth 150 points and the team to cross the finish line together with the fastest time wins the event.

The Fuerzas Comando exercise will run from June 15 -23 when this year’s winner will be announced at the closing ceremony.
