KAPISA PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Provincial Gov. Mehrabuddin Safi, Kapisa Kohnadi Construction Company and Kapisa Provincial Reconstruction Team co-hosted a ground-breaking ceremony to celebrate the construction of the Kapisa Provincial Consul Building, June 8.

The construction of the new Provincial Consul Building marks another step taken by the Kapisa provincial government in strengthening governance for the people of Kapisa, said Safi.

“This building is being constructed for the provincial consul, the representatives of the (Kapisa) people,” said Safi. “For years the people have waited for this, and now they can be quite sure that their representatives will have a respectable place where they can work.”

Now, members of the provincial consul work at separate offices located throughout the district. The consul building will provide the provincial consul a centralized location where they can better coordinate their efforts.

“It’s important for them to have a place to work because they’re the ones who ultimately plan and coordinate which infrastructure or development projects are needed for the province,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Mark Hunt, PRT Civil Affairs chief from Benicia, Calif.

“In addition to having a physical headquarters, the community will now have a visible government reminder of their provincial consul and where they work for the people,” said Hunt.

The building will consist of a briefing room, six offices, a storage room, kitchen facilities, bathrooms and a boundary wall.

“I fully support this construction initiative, and I hope to continue coordinating with the PRT to address additional provincial needs in the future,” said Safi.

The Kapisa PRT assists the Afghan government in providing a secure, stable environment for reconstruction efforts by increasing government officials’ capabilities and capacities. The construction of the Kapisa Provincial Consul Building is an example of the development projects the PRT is using to connect the government to the people and to improve governance and quality of life throughout the province, said Hunt.
