OKINAWA, Japan - U.S. service members smashed golf balls on the Banyan Tree Golf Course during the United Service Organizations 5th Annual Military Friendship Golf Tournament on Kadena Air Base May 27.

The tournament consisted of 24 four-man teams representing their respective services. During this tournament, players were competing for two separate titles: the Battle of the Branches champions, as well as the Military Friendship individual champions.

“The tournament was a fundraiser for the USO,” said Christi Judd-McCleskey, the programs and marketing director for the USO. “The USO is a non-profit organization that uses donations in order to provide services and events like this for our military service members.”

The Marine Corps team, composed of members from Marine Corps Base Camp Butler, walked away as the champions of the battle of the branches tournament after defeating the other 23 teams.

The Military Friendship winner was Chris Howard followed by Naohisa Takakura who placed second and in third place was April Allen.
The teams played 18 holes in the seven-hour competition. Players’ skill ranged from inexperienced to seasoned golfers, according to Herring.

“I had fun in this tournament,” said Tyler Sherwood, a competitor in the tournament. “It was a good time and I plan on participating in more tournaments like this one.”

Throughout the tournament, competitors displayed good sportsmanship and camaraderie, according to Sherwood.

“I think it is a good experience to play with other branches in this tournament,” he said. “It was a good way to build camaraderie between the branches and have a good time with each other.”

The USO has two golf tournaments a year, one in the spring and the other in the fall. The next golf tournament is scheduled for Oct. 21.
