FORWARD OPERATING BASE KUNDUZ, Afghanistan – U.S. Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, the ISAF commander, and German Army Maj. Gen. Markus Kneip, the Regional Command North commander, met with “Vanguard” soldiers with 2nd Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team here May 26.
Petraeus handed his commander’s coins to nine soldiers and one civilian electrician who were chosen amongst their peers for their contributions to the battalion.
“It is a good experience for these young soldiers to be recognized with the ISAF commander's coin, equally it shows that we are doing good things here in Kunduz,” said Sgt. Maj. Christopher Lynch, a Boston native, now the 2-18th Infantry Battalion operations sergeant major.
Inside the battalion’s conference room, Vanguard officers gave a short presentation to ISAF and Regional Command-North leaders, explaining operations and civil projects conducted throughout former insurgent hotspots in the province.
“To have Gen. Petraeus come to see us probably for the last time before he departs as the ISAF commander shows that he respects what our soldiers do on a daily basis to ensure our success in the province,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Sean Watson, the 2-18th Infantry Battalion command sergeant major.
Soldiers with 2-18th Infantry Battalion will continue to conduct counterinsurgency missions throughout Kunduz province in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
