OKINAWA, Japan - The local organizers of the recently completed 2010 Combined Federal Campaign-Overseas were recognized by the Marine Corps Base Camp Butler commanding general at the Ocean Breeze on May 3.

U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Japan collected $657,000 in donations for the CFC-O, and the Department of Defense, as a whole, raised more than $13.7 million.

During the ceremony, 47 awards were presented to individual Marines and units on Okinawa.

The Marine Corps exceeded its 2010 goals for money raised and participation, and has exceeded its goals every year for the past seven years, said Franciela P. Itule, pacific campaign coordinator for the Combined Federal Campaign-Overseas.

The ceremony was a formal way to recognize all of the efforts made behind-the-scenes.

“All awards presented today recognize the hard work and dedication from each unit coordinator during the 2010 campaign,” said Maj. Gen. Peter J. Talleri, commanding general of MCB Camp Butler and deputy commander of Marine Corps Bases Japan.

One of the most significant awards presented was the Outstanding Community Area Project Officers Team Award. This award recognized the outstanding CAPO team who exemplified the true spirit of the CFC-O and demonstrated dedication, leadership and creativity in managing the campaign for their installation or area.

Capt. Angela Markey and Master Sgt. Vesmer Cooper, who made up the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing team, were the recipients of the 2010 Outstanding CAPO Team Award for U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Japan.

“The 1st MAW team put in long hours and hard work, ensuring 100 percent participation,” said Itule. “They took the training and came up with efficient and effective plans that were carried out exceptionally to the end, and they achieved and exceeded their initial goals.”

U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Japan has outstanding leadership that led from the top, said Itule. The leaders showed the importance of this campaign by their example.

“The continued success of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Japan involvement with the CFC-O is [due to] its leadership, hands down,” said Itule.
