FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- Soldiers conduct field training for long hours to make sure they are prepared for any mission or situation they have to accomplish. Every year Loyd Auman Elementary School conducts its own field day, a day of activities that provides students an opportunity to interact with soldiers and get a taste of Army physical fitness training. This year the soldiers of Battery C, 1st Battalion, 321st Airborne Field Artillery Regiment and the 54th Forward Support Company, 188th Brigade Support Battalion, 18th Fires Brigade (Airborne), got to experience a new and unique field day that both challenged and rewarded them.
Field Day at Loyd Auman is an annual event that takes place at the elementary school near the end of the year, to help students wind down before they take their end of grade tests.
“The goal of field day is to give the kids an opportunity to wind down before the end of grade testing,” Stephen Larose, the physical education teacher at Loyd Auman, said, “It’s good for the kids.”
The faculty and staff at Loyd Auman appreciate the efforts and willingness of the soldiers to support the school in its field day events.
“These guys are doing an amazing job,” Larose said, “the kids love the soldiers.”
Tiffany Wallace, a third grade teacher at Loyd Auman said she has enjoyed the support of the Military in community events. She said it lets the children know other people really care about them.
The students of Loyd Auman appreciate and look forward to their annual field day with the soldiers.
“It has been a wonderful experience,” Jennifer Sickert, a second grade teacher at Loyd Auman, said, “the kids really enjoy it.”
The soldiers also enjoyed helping out with field day and even created some of their own activities for the students.
Sgt. Isaiah Duggins, Battery C, 1-321 AFAR and Sgt. Juli Mccasland, 54th FSC, 188th BSB, created a new activity when they combined some of the exercises they learned in the Army with some of the exercise the children do.
Although the soldiers had to adjust from interacting with adults to interacting with children they appreciated the change of pace from their everyday routine and enjoy their interaction with the children.
“It’s been pretty fun,” said Staff Sgt. Nicholas Heaton, Battery C, 1-321st AFAR, “It’s a nice change of pace. It’s an adjustment from working with adults.”
Having accomplished another mission the Soldiers and students left the field with new skills ready to face the challenges of tomorrow.
