PAKTYA PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Task Force Lethal soldiers and the 2-45th Agribusiness Development Team organized a clean-up day in the Dand Patan village bazaar, employing locals and improving security.

The cleanup effort fell under the “Cash-For-Work” program used to infuse cash into an area quickly, with direct results.

Afghan National Security Forces, along with soldiers from Task Force Lethal, from Company B, 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry Regiment, provided security along the perimeter, while the ADT provided security inside the bazaar.

Workers collected more than 500 bags of trash.

“Local children helped improve the appearance of the bazaar and also earned income,” said U.S. Army Capt. Brandon Gray, from West Des Moines, Iowa, commander of Co. B, 1st Bn., 168th Infantry Regiment, Task Force Lethal. “Another benefit was of the improved sanitation in the bazaar for people of Dand Patan and also visitors.”

The C4W programs are limited to less than $5,000 and provide a positive impact to a specific area. C4W focuses on Afghans between 11-18 years of age, because those ages are most susceptible to influence by insurgents or those wishing to destabilize the Afghan government.

“The end result was that for less than $700, the bazaar was cleaned up,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Maj. Lorn McKinzie, from Depew, Okla., the senior noncommissioned officer for the ADT. “That money was well spent and directed at those most at risk of being influenced by the insurgents.”

“I was pleased with the help in cleaning the bazaar,” said Haji Niaz Mohammed Khallili, sub-governor of Dand Patan.Khallili. “An improved bazaar is important because it brings more money into the community and breaks the cycle of insurgency.”

The ADT is planning more projects in Dand Patan, including youth livestock and poultry training, greenhouses and cool storage facilities.
