MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan – Members of Misawa Air Base Chief Petty Officer Association took time out from their Operation Tomodachi OPTEMPO to celebrate the 118th birthday of the chief petty officer, April 1, 2011.

"It is important to celebrate the chief's birthday to remember our naval heritage and tradition," said Chief Petty Officer Benjamin Mathe, aviation electronics technician.

The chiefs vice started the day early with a motivational run around the base. More than 40 chiefs proudly sang cadences as they ran in formation throughout the northern Japan-located U.S. military installation.

Mathe said it was a great way to show CPO pride, while jump start the morning's activities.

"Showing that pride on our deck plates for the sailors and other service members is pretty infectious. Motivation starts at the top and that’s our role not just today, but also for the other 364 days a year,” said Mathe.

Later in the afternoon a barbeque was hosted by the Misawa CPOA. All-hands were invited to attend as the chiefs served hot-dogs, hamburgers and birthday cake to more than 800 Misawa Air Base personnel.

"Part of our job as chief petty officer is to take care of our sailors,” said Naval Air Facility, Misawa Command Master Chief Michael Napier. “We want to celebrate this day with our junior Sailors because someday they will be charged with doing the same.”

The rank of chief petty officer was established on April 1, 1893. Since then, chief petty officers have established themselves as leaders from the enlisted ranks, helping junior sailors understand the importance of the naval heritage, tradition, and their individual contributions to mission accomplishments and personal pride.

"A day like today tells the sailor here in Misawa that the chief is always there every day of the year, providing the guidance and discipline they need as a United States sailor." said Napier.
