Servicemembers braved the blazing Iraqi sun at Logistical Support Area Anaconda to participate in a soccer tournament hosted by the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Center at the H6 housing area.

After competing in temperatures above 100 degrees, the Pay Masters were victorious over the Predators 3-2 to win the tournament.

Comprised of both Air Force and Army personnel, five four-player teams competed in a double-elimination tournament, to exhibit their skills and enjoy some friendly competition.

The tournament followed Fédération Internationale de Football Association and United States Soccer Federation rules, but was slightly modified in order to allow the game to be played on a basketball court, which is smaller than a regulation field.

Each game used a continuously running clock, with 15 minutes per half and a five minute halftime. Penalties were given to teams who argued with the official or for playing too roughly. The players used the tournament to show their soccer skills in a tough competition.

"A bunch of the guys have played in organized leagues," said Air Force Senior Airmen Uwemediimo Essien, a 332d Emergency Medical Group airman and Predators team member. "These were pretty strong players here, but it's not like there is one super power team."

Between the hot weather and high level of competition on the field, tempers may become as heated as the game.

"It got a little testy on the field sometimes," said Sgt. Leroy Alveranga, 40th Corps Support Group, and Dragon Slayers team member.

"Most of the teams had good sportsmanship. If they tackle you rough they will shake your hand and help you up."

"It's soccer," Essien said. "Trash talking is normal. It's ok as long as there are no fists flying," he added.

The players were happy to play in an organized soccer tournament on LSA Anaconda.

"I think the MWR did a very good job putting the tournament together," Alveranga said. "You can't expect to have a posh field to play on in Iraq, you have to appreciate what we have, I'm glad we could come out here, play some ball and have a good time."

The Pay Masters walked away from the tournament and gained the benefit of bragging rights, for now.
