Story by Lance Cpl. Fenton Reese

    Marine Forces Reserve (MARFORRES)

CAMP BLANDING, Fla. – “HE’S DYING! Are you going to let him die?” yelled Petty Officer 1st Class Willis Paul, a hospital corpsman with 4th Tank Battalion, Company E, Detachment 4. “What are you going to do? Are you going to send him home to his family in a box because you couldn’t handle the pressure?”

In combat, Marines face high stress, noise and exhaustion. These are a few symptoms when dealing with the fog of war. Paul truly embraced that concept and put the Marines of 4th Tanks Battalion, Headquarters and Service Company, Detachment 4, through an active, advanced and real-time course of action in his Combat Lifesaver Course, Feb. 22-24.

One would think, why would Marines need to know this when there are corpsmen? That was Paul’s point. There isn’t always a corpsman available. What if the corpsman is the casualty? These are a few things to help put in perspective the importance of this course and why this training, and this style of training, is so necessary.

Paul loves Marines, he said. He loves working with them, teaching them and just being around him.

“The Marines raised me,” said Paul.

Paul is a 23-year corspman. He spent 21 of those years serving with Marines. Paul understands the standards that Marines are held to. He has been in combat and knows the aspect of combat in combat lifesaver.

Due to those facts he tested his students thoroughly, physically and mentally

He certified more than 30 Marines as Combat Life Savers.
