NAVAL AIR STATION NORTH ISLAND, Calif. – This year marks a century of Naval aviation and 99 years of Marine Corps aviation.

The Centennial of Naval Aviation started with Media Day, Friday at Naval Air Station North Island, Calif. Media teams visited Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif to capture footage and record audio for the next Call of Duty game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

A variety of jets and helicopters were on display on the flight line and some of the aircraft were used to create sounds that will be used later in the game.

At MCAS Miramar later in the day, Marines from various units were welcomed home from Afghanistan followed by the mayor of San Diego flying in on an F/A-18 fighter attack jet.

Saturday, the main event of the centennial celebration kicked off with multiple jets and helicopters on display, a car show, the “Metal Mulisha” motorcycle stunt team, and a stage for the thousands of people in the crowd.

“This is a once in a lifetime thing,” said 1st Lt. Matt Hanson, a naval flight officer with Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101, 3rd MAW.

The crowd enjoyed the concerts, stunts, food and aircraft in the morning. In the afternoon, the air show started with planes and helicopters from the Navy and the Marine Corps. The aircraft flew down from MCAS Miramar and amazed the crowd as they flew by at high speeds.

“I came to watch the air show and see the diversity of airplanes,” said Linda Ewing, a business manager for Tow Watson Inc. “I thought it would be great to see all the history at this place.”
Some the aircraft flew by in formations and even stopped and hovered over the water. The Blue Angels, the Navy’s aerobatic team, showed off their skill and a parachute team rained down to color the sky with different colors of smoke as they floated down to their flight line landing zone.
