MOSUL, Iraq (May 27, 2006) -- To see a female police officer in Mosul, Iraq is very uncommon. Seeing them take an active role in training other police officers is exceptional.
Recently, at the Mosul Public Safety Academy, eight female police officers graduated from a train the trainer course. They officers attended a three week course and will now take their teaching skills back to their respected police stations and help train other officers.
"There are 48 female Iraqi Police officers in the province and all of them volunteered," said Mr Marty Baker, class instructor. "The provincial IP Headquarters interviewed over 20 of them and selected the final 8 students."
According to Baker, in the near future the female IP instructors will fill instructor slots at the MPSA to teach female students from the province. Right now, no female police officers have attended an IP academy.
"This is the first class of its kind in Ninewah, but there have been other classes such as this in other parts of the country" said Baker.
Each block of instruction included practical exercises with the female officers conducting the instruction of the class they just received.
"The female Iraqi Police in the class are generally more receptive to new concepts," said Baker. "They also usually shoot better than the males and they are better listeners"
The graduates were awarded their course completion certificates by Brig. Gen. Abdul Aziz, Chief of Operations and Training for Ninewa.
