TIKRIT, Iraq - More than 70 units on Contingency Operating Base Speicher, Iraq, are contributing toward Operation New Dawn. One airman deployed from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., keeps soldiers, sailors and airmen in the fight.

Never underestimating the importance one person can make is the key point for U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Sarah Taylor, automated data processing and equipment technician, assigned to COB Speicher’s direct support signal team. She knows she is part of a team ensuring mission success for 4,500 people operating 7,000 devices critical to the Iraq training and advise mission.

“My job here has a very critical part, because we have to fix any computer brought in to us, and give it back to the customer in a quick manor so they can continue the missions they have,” Airman Taylor said.

Having more than a 30-step process to reconfigure the computers brought to them isn’t a quick task, including the fact her unit usually works on 60 to 100 computers a week.

“Airman Taylor is an outstanding and hardworking airman, she is definitely one of the best I’ve had,” said Staff Sgt. Gissell Gilbert, ADPE non-commissioned officer in charge and Airman Taylor’s supervisor. “She’s very successful on the job and knowing the fact that this job is entirely different from her job at her home station and how she picked this job up so quickly is remarkable.”

After working the same job for three months at Joint Base Balad, Iraq, Airman Taylor joined her current unit at COB Speicher. At both bases the Moultrie, Ga., native, was doing a job she has never done before.

“Coming from Vandenberg AFB to here, I’ve learned a lot, since I was a knowledge operation manager and the 532nd Training Squadron commander’s secretary,” she said. “So, it’s definitely a new experience.”

While working to ensure the base keeps going, Airman Taylor also helps work on the morale in her unit on her off time, as her and her supervisor initiate group barbecues at the end of the work days.

“Sometimes Sergeant Gilbert and I go and get a few things to try and start a morale barbecue after the work day ends,” said the Ford Mustang driver. “Because I know it helps out and keeps everyone’s attitudes in the right direction while they’re deployed.”

Enjoying her job and the service members she works with, it’s making Airman Taylor’s first deployment a rewarding experience.

“I appreciate everyone I work with and I’m proud that my job is making a significant impact on the mission here in Iraq,” she said.
