CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – Chaplains, religious programs specialists, Navy and Marine Corps service members gathered in a chapel at Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan, to celebrate the religious programs specialists’ birthday, Jan. 15.

The festivities not only marked the 32nd year of the RP’s military occupational specialty, it was also the first birthday celebration to be held in a deployed setting.

RP duties include supporting chaplains, maintaining records, assisting in preparation of devotional and religious educational materials; determining, developing, managing and maintaining the administrative and logistical support requirements of religious programs and facilities aboard ships and various other tasks.

“This is actually the first time we’ve ever done an RP birthday in country,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael A. Munoz, RP with 9th Communications Battalion, Regional Command Southwest. “It is usually something held back in the rear.”

Munoz said not all the RPs and chaplains in the area of operations could come due to the mission, but many who were at Camp Leatherneck came with supporting Marines and sailors. It made for a great turnout and laid the foundation for future RP celebrations to be held in country.

Navy Chief Darin M. Runge, 42, senior enlisted leader for religious ministries, RC (SW), said the event was a morale builder and appreciated all those that took time out of their day to help them celebrate.

“The event being held on the actual RP rating birthday was a success,” said Runge. “To have the amount of support from each individual RP, everyone had a part to play and it was executed very well.”

    “Happy birthday,” said Munoz.
