    Story by Capt. Jodi Witt

1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division

KUNDUZ, Afghanistan – Mission objectives were surpassed and security was greatly enhanced in the Gor Tepa region of Kunduz Province in Regional Command North, Afghanistan, recently, as soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division conducted a mission with their Afghan national security force counterparts.

The main objective for the operation was to secure the local area and to establish a presence of stability for the local populace.

The complex mission involved planning and input from the Afghan National Army, the Afghan National Police, local Arbaki and members of the International Security Assistance Force.

During the first week of operations, the partnered forces secured over 6,000 meters of road by locating and destroying multiple improvised explosive devices, confiscating large caches of weapons, and providing security to an area that was under the control of insurgents.

The ANSF established multiple checkpoints throughout the region. This provided security for the local populace and has allowed residents safe travel.

“The people in Saman Zay said that we are doing humanitarian work by clearing the roads and making it safe for children,” said Capt. Matthew Adkins, commander of Charlie Company, 1-87 Inf.

As the operation continues, the combined force is seeing positive results. Local residents have welcomed the security forces and have helped replace dirt in the holes left by detonated IED’s.

“The people are excited,” said Capt. Steve Bartkowsi, commander of Alpha Company, 1-87 Inf. “The first question they have is whether or not we plan to stay, when we say we are they get even more excited.”

This operation has also allowed for the disbursement of humanitarian assistance. The security forces have provided educational supplies and winter clothing to residents in need.

For the ANSF and members of ISAF, the diligent and precise planning efforts have paid off. The partnered mission has established and defined the true meaning of partnership.
