    Afghan, coalition forces target Taliban leader responsible for attack on security forces

    KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces targeted a Taliban leader responsible for an attack Jan. 7 in Charkh District during a security operation detaining four suspected insurgents in Logar province yesterday.

    The Taliban leader led the complex attack using improvised explosive devices and direct fire as a joint convoy was returning to Combat Outpost Charkh. During the attack, two American soldiers were killed, three Americans wounded and two Afghan National Army soldiers were killed along with one local national.

    The Taliban leader operates in the Charkh District of Logar and provides IED, logistical and intelligence support to Taliban insurgents.

    A security force followed intelligence reports to a compound in Logar province to search for the senior leader. Afghan forces conducted the callout for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully before conducting a search. After initial questioning at the scene, the security force detained three suspected insurgents.

    A second security force targeted a separate compound also in Logar province. Again, Afghan forces conducted the callout for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully before conducting a search. After initial questioning at the scene, the security force detained an additional suspected insurgent.

    The security force protected the women and children for the duration of the operation.

    The security force conducted the operation without firing their weapons.
