4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division

OGDEN, Kan. – Math, English and art. Not typical subjects you’d find Soldiers of the 701st Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, teaching to fellow Soldiers, let alone elementary school students. “Diligent” Soldiers recently helped out at Ogden Elementary School as part of the Army’s Adopt a School program.

The Soldiers went from classroom to classroom from Nov. 7-10 to provide help and mentorship for students. They spread duties ranging from reading “The Flag We Love” to students, helping with fractions in math class and getting kids ready for their physical education exam.

“Gym class was interesting. We actually made it so they can use the ropes in the gym class now,” said Spc. Kerissa Moore of Co. C, 701st BSB. “And going back to fifth grade and learning how to do fractions over because I totally forgot how to do fractions,” Moore added, laughing.

More than just helping kids with drawings and showing them how Soldiers get ready for their physical training tests, the Adopt a School program allows the kids to communicate with the troops as a lot of them have parents deployed and serving overseas.

“They tell us stories about what their parents do and we discuss what our jobs is and what our main focus is when we deploy so they have a better idea of what the environment’s like for their family members,” Moore said.

The Soldiers had a great rapport with the kids as they rotated between classrooms, also engaging in some of the activities they were doing.

“I probably had ten hands being raised saying, ‘Oh, my dad’s in the Army, my uncle’s in the Army, my mom’s overseas,’” said Elise McDonald, a physical education teacher at Ogden Elementary. “Even if their parents are overseas right now, still seeing somebody here that might know their mom or know their dad … it’s very great.”

Soldiers of the 701st BSB also walked with the students of Ogden Elementary School during the Veteran’s Day Parade in Manhattan, Kan.
